The Day The Lights Went Out

Solar Eclipse 1999

Solar Eclipse 1999 - click to view full size

I was sitting on a cliff top just off Polzeath Beach with my wife and some friends. As I remember there was a fair bit of cloud cover on the day but we still saw the eclipse when it happened.
A few minutes before totallity the sea went really flat and the seagulls were circling around not knowing what was going on. Then it started to get cold and the light started to fade. There was still light on the horizon to the west though. Silence feel on everyone as they talked in hushed tones until the light started to filter back through and cheers and applause could be heard from all around the cliff tops and camera flashes twinkling off all the distant cliffs too.
An amazing few minutes......
