Record for Consecutive College Football Wins - click to view full size

In 1957 the University of Oklahoma won its 47th consecutive game--a record that has withstood the test of time through the 1998 season.

A small college in Alliance, Ohio, dominated its level (NCAA III) like Oklahoma did in the 1950s.

Over time, Mount Union won four championships (1993-96-97-98) leasing up to the big event in 1999.

With my work as a college football stathistorian/resarcher I have been fortunate to have attended a number of big games—but none bigger than the one I saw Oct. 16, 1999.

Making the 8 hour trip from my home in Indiana to Northeast Ohio was well-worth the trip.

Known as the Purple Raiders, Mount Union has become known as a team to raid-enemy end zones—scoring points almost at will since 1993, scoring a composite total of 9565 points from 1993, 1995-2008—each of these seasons, the team scored at least 500+ Points.

The 14 seasons from 1995 through season, has seen the team score 8985 points.

Back in 1999, the team scored 649; but despite the record setting performance was defeated in the semi-final, 24-17.

During the record-setting game, the team won 44-20, as it defeated Ohio Conference rival, Otterbein.

While most college football fans are typically “fanatical” when their team found its way into the end zone, Mount Union’s faithful would show the customary support: standing, clapping and cheering, following a score; this game was no exception.

Though this time (and maybe others, since this was the only I have seen them play; fans would cheer and the sit down and ready for the defense to take over.

Because of the historic moment that was expected, there was an over-flow crowd of both fans and in the Press Box. I was one of the members of the media that sat outside of the Box—personally didn’t mind as I was there to see history being made.

It was. And as the team exited the field, it received a long and thunderous applause.

The streak would end at 54 games with the lost less than two months later in the post-season round of games...but the team regrouped and established another mark 55 consecutive games without a setback.

Since 1869, college football has many memorable events—and this game became part of the sport's lore--and I am glad to say this was "My Time in History."
