Elton John rocks a soggy concert at Mercedes Benz World!!
When we heard that Elton John was holding a concert in our small village in Byfleet we couldn't believe it. It wasn't often that a big superstar like him played here - in fact never had anyone played here before!
It was being held at the new Mercedes Benz World, which is basically a glorified car show room with a test track. A specially constructed arena was put up outside for the event. Perfect for a glorious sunny Friday evening.
When the day arrived - the weather was far from that. We had torrential down pours, the skies blackened and the ground was muddy and very wet. This was far from perfect for an open air concert.
We were soaked through before the support had started - by the time Elton John came on stage we were debating whether to give the whole thing a miss and go home!! Anyway we stuck it out. Our seats were on flat ground level - they were rubbish, plus we were not allowed any umbrellas either. The rain was pouring down at a steady rate. Not good when you are freezing with wet trousers. We decided to stand up at the edge where we also had a better view and could huddle together.
He started the show off with 'Daniel' - a classic hit though not really uplifting enough to get the crowd excited. There were many people getting up and leaving now. Perhaps he should have played 'I'm still standing' or something similar which would have got everyone moving. It did get much better however and he rocked the arena with all his classic hits - I'm still standing, Crocodile rock, Your Song, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Candle in the Wind and finished the show with Pin Ball Wizard. As the evening drew to an end so did the rain. The event was very good dispite the rain. We were glad that we stuck it out.
