RUE DE SOIF
Rue de soif

How many claims to fame relate to things that happen in the wee small hours? Mine took place in Paris during the 1999 Rugby World Cup (the last one we didn't get to the final of) when, after seeing our brave lads knocked out by the South Africans (who went on to win) at the then new Stade de France we went for a meal and then repaired to a rugby fans heaven - a street of rugby related bars known as the Rue de Soif. There we drank beer with English and South African fans and with a number of the defeated English team. At 2 in the morning I found myself in a group of six with Jason Leonard and Laurence Dallaglio, a couple of people from my party and a very happy South African anxious to be magnanimous to the defeated English. The players took everything in good part, were generous in defeat, and one of our party returned to the hotel bearing a gift of Jason Leonards cuff links - don't know if he still has them. A great and typically rugby moment - happy mix of opposing fans and players and you could really tell which were the players - these guys really are huge.
