A VISIT TO GROUND ZERO

9/11
Story by TheCoder

I remember being at work on the day it happened. The news on the radio was very sketchy and seemed unrealistic. It wasn't until I had gotten home before it really sank in as I sat watching the news.

It wasn't until recently (June 2007) that I was able to take a holiday to the US and visit Ground Zero (picture above taken by me). It was a very sombre experience looking down threw the chain link fence at the cleanup operation.

The tour guide had done an excellent job of explaining what had taken place and what had occured afterwards. He explained that it had taken months and months to go through the rubble trying to find any survivors, or more likely, remains. There had been a great deal of disabelief as reports had come in days after 9/11 when helicopters located bodies lying on the roofs of near by buildings (apparently dozens had attempted to jump from the falling tower in a hope of trying to land on another building), and then again after finding many more bodies trapped in storm drains beneath the towers.

But there is hope, a new tower, taller than the twin towers, is being built in it's place. And near it in the surrounding area remains the only piece of one of the towers that wasn't destroyed, a small section of a concrete stairwell.
