England were undefeated in Test matches in the 2004 calendar year, which took the team to second in the ICC Test Championship and raised hopes that the 2005 Ashes series would be closely fought. In fact, the series was even more competitive than anyone had predicted, and was still undecided as the final session of the final test began.
