Steve Chattaway made his mark in history as he was crowned the new King of Piel.
In time honoured tradition, the new landlord of the Ship Inn was drenched with beer while sitting in Piel’s ancient chair at the ceremony.
The crowning was witnessed by more than 2500 people, including former landlords/kings, and Martin Clunes the actor.
Mr Clunes was on the tiny island filming for a new series for ITV called Islands of Britain.
The new King said: “It’s been an emotional day. I nearly filled up.
“My bottom lip went and I couldn’t look at Sheila. It’s been better than I dreamed of.”
The island looked splendid in the sun, with the castle decked out in bunting and surrounded by a flotilla of ships from around the coast of Britain and the Isle of Man.
Many of those attending were dressed as knights, Vikings and pirates, and 200 people ventured over the sands from Walney with Councillor John Murphy.
The tradition of the King of Piel dates back to 1487 when pretender to the English throne, Lambert Simnel, declared himself king after landing on the island.
