More than two hours after driving one of the most spectacular races of his career, Lewis Hamilton, the leader of the Formula One championship (at the time) and the man who crossed the finish line first to take the victory at the Belgian Grand Prix, was given a 25-second penalty that demoted him to third place.
The McLaren Mercedes driver was judged to have gained an unfair advantage after cutting the final corner of the track two laps before the end. The victory, therefore, went to Felipe Massa of Ferrari, who had crossed the finish line in second place, and the second position went to Nick Heidfeld of BMW Sauber, who had crossed third.
