A bouncing fiver
I was about 18 at the time and had gone over to my girlfriends grandparent's house to meet her and then go on to the cinema. I waited in the hallway for her when I noticed her grandfather shuffling across the hallway towards me. He stretched out his hand to me and so I held out mine thinking he wanted to shake it but to my surprise he pressed a five pound note into it (which paid for the cinema tickets). Now I hear you ask what's so amazing about that? Well this man (my girlfriend's grandfather) was none other than Sir Barnes Wallis the inventor of the bouncing bomb, designer of the Wellington aircraft, pioneer of swing wing aircraft and much more. I actually meet him several times at their house and was at his 90th birtday party too, where he had the most amazing bouncing bomb birthday cake. He was a lovely man as was his wife and family.
